rāma navami

sri rama navami

rāma navami is the celebration of Lord rāmā’s birth. This festival falls on the ninth day of the bright half (śukla pakṣa) of the lunar cycle of caitra māsa, the first month in the bhāratīya year (samvatsara).  It is also part of the vasanta navarātrī festival, which begins on ugādi and ends on rāma navamī. This year rāma navami is on Saturday, April 5.

We, at the temple, celebrate this festival with the following events on Saturday, April 5:

11:30 a.m.rāma parivār abhiṣēkam
4 p.m.edurukolu
5 p.m.sita-rama kalyanam
7 p.m.dhup arati
7 p.m. onwardskalyana bhojanam
7:30 p.m.bhajans
8:30 p.m.sej arati

This is an elaborate celebration with many events. It starts with abhiṣēkam for rāma parivār at 11:30 in the morning. The afternoon events start with a light-hearted communal pallaki sēvā (edurukōlu) for Lord rāma and dēvī sītā. This is followed by an elaborate sītā-rāma kalyāṇam (celestial wedding) performed by our chief priest brahmaśrī mārēpaḷḷi nāga venkaṭa śāstri gāru.

This is followed by a grand served dinner – kalyāṇa bhōjanam. Each year, this is the only event where devotees can get a sit-down served dinner. This dinner is free for all.
