gaṇeṣa caturtī is the celebration of the birth of gaṇeṣa elephant-headed child of mother pārvatī.
This occurs on the 4th day of the waxing moon (śukla pakṣa) of the bhādrapada māsā. This typically falls between August 22 and September 20. It is also referred to as vināyaka caturthi or vināyaka cauti. This festival is celebrated for nine days during which hand-made idols of gaṇeṣa (typically out of clay) are worshipped. On the tenth day, the idol (made out of clay) is immersed in a nearby body of water such as a river or sea.
The original name for gaṇeṣa is gaṇapati, which means guardian of the multitudes. Lord gaṇeṣa is the deity of new beginnings, remover or obstacles, and the Lord governing wisdom and intelligence.
