sankaṭa hara caturthi, also known as sankaṣhṭi caturthi or sankaṣhṭi, is observed every month on the fourth day (caturthi) of the waning phase (kṛṣṇa pakṣa) of the moon. It is dedicated to Lord gaṇeṣa, the remover of obstacles and the patron deity of new beginnings. On sankaṭa hara caturthi days we honor Lord gaṇeṣa’s benevolent nature and his role as the remover of obstacles.
The next sankaṭa hara caturthi is on Saturday, February 15. You can participate in this event by sponsoring the abhiṣekam for Lord gaṇeṣa by clicking here. Typically, the abhiṣekam is performed at 7 p.m. Please check the days event schedule for confirmation.
It is believed that on this day, Lord śiva declared Lord gaṇeṣa as a supreme deity and the leader of his army. Devotees observe this event to seek blessings and protection from Lord gaṇeṣa, praying for the well-being of their families and overcoming life’s challenges.
Observance of sankaṭa hara caturthi can involve a strict fast (upavāsa) from morning till evening, followed by an evening puja (worship) dedicated to Lord gaṇeṣa. Some devotees may opt for a partial fast, consuming fruits, vegetables, and roots of plants. After the puja, devotees sight the moon and offer prayers to the moon god, concluding the fast.
