When hanumān (ānjaneya) was a child, he took a liking to the blazing sun. He flew up to catch it. At the same time, rāhu devā was racing to catch the sun for an eclipse. hanumān, being the son of vāyu (deity of wind), easily won the race to reach the sun. In appreciation of hanumān’s valor, rāhu devā granted a boon saying that whoever worshiped ānjaneya with food items made of urad dal (a favorite of rāhu devā) will get relief from the effects of ‘rāhu doṣā’. By offering vaḍa mālā to ānjaneya, one seeks the blessings of ānjaneya and rāhu devā.
